Ludhiana: For 15-year-old Arshpreet Kaur, who trained under the same academy as pugilist Simranjit Kaur initially, who debuted at Tokyo, the fact that Olympics this year is dominated by women from the hinterlands of India is the most welcoming news perhaps, considering Covid has wrecked normalcy for sportspersons. The boxer, who has already bagged many medals, is now raring to go.
Manpreet Kaur, Arshpreet’s mother, says her daughter won a bronze medal in boxing in the National Championship on July 30 in the 48-50kg weight category. She adds that her daughter is three-time gold medalist at state level and, on the basis of her performance at the championship, she has been selected for Fourth Junior Girls and Third Junior Boys Boxing Championship 2021 and she bagged a bronze at the championship on July 30, again in 48-50kg weight category. But unfortunately, the outbreak of Covid-19, made her pause in her stride towards excellence, as national championship was cancelled twice.
Ludhiana: A group of 16 people assaulted the in-charge of Jalaldiwal police post, Raikot, in Gobindgarh, Sadar Raikot, on Thursday night when he, along with a constable, reached there on receiving a complaint.
ASI Gursewak Singh said in his police complaint, “Amandeep Kaur of Gobindgarh had called up the police control room, saying her in-laws were harassing her. After receiving the information from the control room, I along with constable Harminder Singh went to the spot at 9.45pm. On reaching there, we saw Amandeep and her parents standing outside the house of accused Harbans Singh. Amandeep said Harbans was her uncle (brother of her father-in-law) and that he and other family members have taken away her son and thrown her out of the house.”

Following the shootings in Atlanta, Harshpreet Kaur, a freshman at UGA and secretary of the Sikh Student Association, said her parents cautioned her against drawing attention to herself. They feared if she made her opinions pronounced, she could be a target for a hate crime.
âDonât try to pick a fight with anybody. We don t know if something could happen to you. Just stay calm in all the situations so there s no backlash,â Kaur said her parents advised her.
Still, Kaur and Sodhi remain unwavering advocates of social justice and equality, which they said is a central belief to the Sikh faith.
