(File photo) The first part of the hospital was opened 120 years ago, and its main block now has seismic and fire safety issues, as well as areas being too small for purpose. Northland District Health Board and the Ministry of Health have been investigating options since 2015, with the health board wanting a $572 million replacement of the main hospital block. Chairman Harry Burkhardt​ said the Government had already agreed to the redevelopment, and he did not believe the health reforms would compromise the project, set to be built in three to five years.

A 7.4 event was recorded at 6.41am off Raoul Island, the largest of the Kermadec Islands, followed at 8.28am by a shallow 8.1 quake in the same area.
