Candidates for the Dock Workers Union (DWU) general secretary post yesterday took a swipe at each other as the campaigns for the May 20 elections hit the homestretch.
As some candidates called for the postponement of the polls, General Secretary Simon Sang cancelled an earlier arrangement to have the County Labour Officer run the polls.
In a letter dated May 8, Sang said the last DWU National Executive Committee re-defined the role of the returning officer, saying the labour officer can oversee the election but not run it. He said the polls would now be conducted by an election board as directed by the registrar of trade unions.

From slashed overtime to privatisation of some operations, unionisable dockworkers at the Port of Mombasa are yearning for change as they scout for a strong representative in the forthcoming elections.
One of the issues that have dominated the campaigns for next month’s polls is the plan by the government to place container terminal 2 under a private operator.

Campaigns for the port workers’ union have gone full throttle with top contenders expressing hope of clinching the coveted general secretary’s post.
Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, aspirants for the Dock Workers Union (DWU) general secretary have been meeting workers in small groups as they seek to oust incumbent Simon Sang, who has led the body for 15 years.
