If dysfunction were measured in fire alarms, Pennsylvania’s legislature would rightly be a five-alarm fire. Pennsylvania’s legislature, among the largest and highest paid in the country, does appallingly little lawmaking, even when the issue before them is a certified no-brainer.
Our full-time legislators in the House met 69 days, and Senate members only 52 days, in the last calendar year. At the beginning of every legislative session, the two bodies of our bloated, dysfunctional, do-nothing legislature vote on the rules. On the afternoon of Jan. 7, during my school lunch break, I decided I had had enough and called the Erie office of my congressman, U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, to voice my concerns with his outrageous attempts to undermine the election in Pennsylvania and disenfranchise his own constituents.
Understanding Kelly s track record with critical feedback, I assumed I would not get too far, but I decided to try. Sadly, but unsurprisingly, I was unable to convey my message to anybody at Kelly s office. After a staffer answered my call, I explained that I hoped to leave a message for Kelly. I began to rattle off why I thought Kelly s objections to Pennsylvania s free and fair election were absolutely ludicrous, but, alas, my efforts were to no avail.
