Stanford s 16A boys water polo club team improved over the past two years and the results were readily on display in Saturday s opening of the USA Water Polo National Junior Olympics at locations throughout Orange County.
Playing without two of its top players, second-seeded Stanford beat Bakersfield 15-4 and San Jose WPF A 15-5, both at Estancia High in Costa Mesa.
Luke Bachler and Jacob Tsotadze, both from Sacred Heart Prep, are out with bad backs. Both are questionable.
In the last version of the JOs, two years ago in Orange County, the team placed 15th in the 14-year-old age group.
On the boys side, Gunn (6-6) earned the seventh seed and Sacred Heart Prep (6-5) qualified and will play Monday at Homestead (6-7).
Menlo (9-0) earned a bye into the second round and will host the winner of Harker (3-4) at Lynbrook (7-3) on Wednesday afternoon.
The Titans will host a second-round match against either Westmont (6-2) or Aragon (5-5).
A total of nine SCVAL teams, who only learned Friday they were eligible to participate, were selected for the tournament, with Cupertino (9-1) the highest seed at No. 3.
The finals are slated for May 27, likely at the home of the higher seed.

Teddy Pasquesi and Harrison Rohlen each scored a pair of goals and the Sacred Heart Prep boys water polo beat host Serra, 17-3, in a West Catholic Athletic League match Wednesday evening.
Luke Weigle and Gavin West each added two goals for the Gators (6-0), who travel to San Jose for a match against Valley Christian on Thursday afternoon.
John Kirinchich, Jack Vort and West each contributed two assists as SHP scored the first six goals of the contest.
