Composer Hector Berlioz created Symphonie Fantastique, a hugely influential program symphony from the early Romantic period, to tell the story of his obsessive love for actor Harriet Smithson. They had never met. He wrote her dozens of letters (all unanswered). He rented a new apartment by hers so he could see inside her home.
