SHARPSBURG, MDâThe setting for the Burnside Bridge is a peaceful one. Rolling hills and picturesque nearby farms are all part of the scenery. You almost forget that this bridge was part of the bloodiest day in American history during the American Civil War: the Battle of Antietam. In a March 24 tour of this historic site, battlefield tour guide Joseph Stahl will give participants a very personal glimpse of that horrible fight through pictures and the words of those who fought in it.
This special free walking tour, which begins at 6 p.m. at the bridge in the battlefield, is sponsored by the Harpers Ferry Civil War Round Table. The Round Table is an informal organization dedicated to providing a place for Civil War enthusiasts to expand their knowledge and interact with other like-minded people. Chris Craig, treasurer of the Round Table, said the tour is filling up fast.
