Bilal, Haroon fail to qualify for Tokyo Olympics

KARACHI: Pakistani wrestlers Mohammad Bilal and Haroon Abid failed to qualify for this summerâs Tokyo Olympics when they fell at different stages in their competitions of the World Olympic Games Qualifiers in Sofia, Bulgaria, on Thursday.
Bilal started his 57kg journey well when he defeated Anatolii Buruian of Moldova 9-6 in the qualification round. But he lost to Giorgi Edishera Shvili of Azerbaijan 6-2 in the round of 16.
Bilal is expected to get repechage as his second round rival Giogi has reached semi-finals. If he qualifies for the final then Bilal will get a repechage fight which will be held on Friday (today). Haroon lost to Timofei Xenidis of Greece in the first round of the 97kg competition 11-0. The top two in each weight category will qualify for the Olympics.

KARACHI: Two Pakistan wrestlers, accompanied by an official, will fly out of Sialkot for Bulgaria via Dubai on Wednesday (today) to feature in the Tokyo Olympic Games World Qualifiers which will be held in Sofia from May 6-9.
The wrestlers are Mohammad Bilal (57kg) and Haroon Abid (97kg). They will be accompanied by coach/manager Arshad Sattar, who is also the secretary of the Pakistan Wrestling Federation (PWF).
Because of the Covid issue only a three-day visa has been issued to the squad. They will return on May 8.
“Yes, only a three-day visa has been issued to us,” PWF secretary Arshad Sattar told ‘The News’ from Lahore on Tuesday.

Pakistani wrestlers made an attempt to earn Olympics berths in the Asian qualifying round in Almaty the other day but failed. It was a tough event in which the country fielded three grapplers: seasoned Mohammad Inam, Mohammad Bilal and Haroon Abid, in the 97kg, 57kg and 125kg categories, respectively.
Bilal lost his first fight, which was the quarter-final, while Haroon fell in both his fights, the qualification and repechage contest. Inam lost his 97kg quarter-final against a tough grappler of Uzbekistan, who was also the 2016 Rio Olympics bronze medallist. He was given a repechage bronze medal fight against a player from Kyrgyzstan whom he beat to earn bronze medal. This was the first bronze for Pakistan in any Asian qualifying round.
