I just use a plain knife tool - with a cutting edge square to the spindle centreline, a plan trail angle of about 20 degrees and a point radius of about 20 thou/ half a mm. Leftmost tool in the pic.
If I m roughing, I might angle the toolpost to give a plan approach angle of 10 degrees or so, but as an amateur machinist I m not often in enough of a hurry to do that.
If I m finishing, I quite often cock the toolpost over so as to almost eliminate the plan trail angle, and use the trailing edge of the tool almost as a shaving face - small depth of cut, low speed, bit of lube, variable feed depending on results.
Hi newbie from mid Lincolnshire here. I have recently purchased a Myford super 7B lathe. I have always tinkered with motorcycles and have got the lathe so I can take my tinkering to the next level.
While I have some limited experience on a Myford S7 from 30 odd years ago I always had someone else to sharpen the tools. Some HSS tools came with the lathe but I haven’t got a clue how to sharpen them correctly. I have invested in some books in the workshop practice series to learn, but there is no substitute for being shown which in today’s climate is hard to do.
And as recent Forum posts have shown, there are scammers out there waiting for the unwary.
An old machine will lack the features normal to more modern machines, may be worn or damaged, and could have parts missing. Finding replacements can be problematical, even IF a part can be found. It may be even more worn or damaged than the part that you want to replace. Or your machine may be a Mk1, and the part, when it arrives turns out to be for a Mk2A. and so either will not fit
(They upgraded / changed the gears, sizes or threads? May even have inverted things like dovetails)

Guessing here, but fix might be 1) bore oversize, 2) fix in bushes, 3) machine holes in correct relation to each other, 4) ream and 5) replace pivot pin.
That s the general plan.
Found I don t have T-nuts to fit cross slide on lathe, (the set that came with it don t fit,
Got them several years and this is the first time I ve tried them
got to make some and some accurate height packing so I can bore hole as shown in article (I don t trust mill to get it accurate yet, lets fix one thing at a time)
