Sturgis Public Schools Board of Education on Monday welcomed newly hired staff members to the district. Andrea Barry, seventh-grade science, Sturgis Middle School. Barry has a Bachelor of Arts in English from Michigan State University with minors in psychology and sociology. She completed her teacher certification program from Eastern Michigan University with a major in elementary provisional, K-8, and minors in language arts and science. Barry taught language arts for two years at American International School Brazzaville, Republic of Congo. She previously taught in Marshall and Lincoln City, Ore.  Katie Bir, first grade, Wall Elementary. Bir graduated from University of Arizona with a Bachelor in Education Studies and a Master in Business Administration. Most recently, she was a long-term substitute teacher at Wall. Bir was an intelligence analyst for National Security Agency, U.S. Air Force.

Teacher Appreciation Week is the opportunity to honor teachers

Teacher Appreciation week was May 3-7 and Sturgis teachers were honored in various ways.  At Wall Elementary School, the parent association gave a token of appreciation for teachers each day, said principal Harmonee McCrea. That included a snow cone vendor, coffee and doughnuts, massages, bingo with prizes and yard signs for the teachers and staff. At Congress and Wenzel elementary schools, the parents Lighthouse team gave teachers customized tumblers, doughnuts and coffee, gift cards, candy with custom messages, provided lunch on several days and signs for their yards, principal Vincent LaPorte said. Sarah Arreola, dean of students at Sturgis High School, said the gifts included individually wrapped dessert from Yoder’s Country Market in Centerville and coffee from Five Lakes in Sturgis, served in a cafe with music playing and diffusers with essential oils.
