On Feb. 16, a bar in Illinois held a celebratory, maskless event to celebrate the end of lockdown. According to the most recent Centers for Disease Control (CDC) morbidity and mortality report, that party led to dozens of new cases of COVID-19, a school closure affecting 650 children, and the hospitalization of one nursing home resident.
The transmission can be traced to a single asymptomatic individual who tested positive the day before the event, but chose to attend anyway, and four symptomatic people who received positive COVID-19 diagnoses days afterward. Following the event, 29 patrons tested positive – and that was only the beginning.
