COQUITLAM, B.C. It was supposed to be a peaceful end to a busy day. On Thursday evening, Gina Chong and her friend were strolling along Lafarge Lake in Coquitlam. A stranger asked them to take a photo of her using her phone. Citing COVID-19 concerns, the pair declined. Chong says that’s when the woman went on a racist tirade. “We heard from her, ‘This COVID came from you guys. Go back to China. It came from your country,’” Chong told CTV News Vancouver. Chong, who was born and raised in Canada, pulled out her cell phone and began recording the woman, who is seen on video berating the pair. Chong says her first reaction isn’t normally to record a negative encounter, but the pandemic has her on edge.
VANCOUVER Police in two more Metro Vancouver cities say they ve noticed a significant increase in hate crimes in their jurisdictions. Both Burnaby RCMP and Delta Police issued statements Thursday about the rise in reports. In Burnaby, Mounties say 2020 saw a 350 per cent increase in hate crimes involving Asian victims. While six of those crimes were reported in the city in 2019, the RCMP says 27 were reported the following year. Throughout the past year, our officers have continued to monitor this increase, said Supt. Graham de la Gorgendiere, in a news release. These offences range from property damage, including offensive graffiti, to threats and assaults.

According to the Delta Police, one officer’s decision to station himself in the backstreets of Ladner positioned him in the right place, right time to save a man’s life.
The officer – a junior member in the department – was writing paperwork in his vehicle at the corner of 28th Ave and 53rd Street, just before 1 am on Jan. 16.
Out of the corner of his eye he spotted a moving light from a farm field to the east in the 5600 block of 28th Avenue.
