Verdict in students’ case reserved Lahore February 2, 2021 LAHORE:The Lahore High Court on Monday reserved verdict on a habeas corpus petition against the alleged illegal detention of five persons including students as the police said the detainees had been discharged. Haider Ali Butt, a student, filed the petition for the recovery of his fellows Zubair Siddiqui, Sanaullah, Ali Ashraf, Salman Sikandar and Haris Asad who were allegedly picked up by the police following a widespread protest against on-campus examination by some private universities. On being summoned, the investigating officer appeared before Justice Ali Baqar Najafi and stated that the petition stood infructuous since the alleged detainees had been discharged of the cases. Advocate Usama Khawar Ghumman, on behalf of the petitioner, argued that the police officials involved in the illegal detention of the students should not be spared and needed to be punished under the law.

The FIR was registered by the state at the Township police station. It read that the five suspects, identified as Zubair Siddiqui, Sanaullah, Ali Ashraf, Salman Sikander, and Haris Asad, incited students outside the varsity to resort to violence through hate speech.

Court seeks reply on plea seeking of detained students

Petitioner claims she was sexually harassed by police LAHORE: The Lahore High Court’s (LHC) Justice Ali Baqar Najafi sought reply from the quarters concerned on a plea seeking recovery of five detenues, including a university student, arrested in connection with protests against on-campus examinations at the University of Central Punjab (UCP). Petitioners Haider Ali Butt and Sidra Iqbal filed their habeas corpus petition through advocate Usama Khawar Ghumman contending police detained one detenue despite he produced his bail order. The rest four students were also “illegally detained” by police despite they had nothing to do with protests. The petitioner claimed she was also sexually harassed by police at the time of arrests of the detenue. They implored that detenus have been picked up without any legal justification in an unlawful manner.
