Larchmont stars in a tale of love, chaos and community : Larchmont Chronicle

HEATHER HALDEMAN wrote a memoir of growing up in Fremont Place. Heather is at left, and her mom, Marilyn Eaton, is at right. Larchmont Boulevard, Fremont Place and the surrounding neighborhoods feature prominently in a new memoir by Heather Haldeman, “Kids & Cocktails Don’t Mix.” The mother of three grew up in Fremont Place in the 1960s and ’70s, when women dressed for their men and connived to attain what they wanted. With her indomitable mother, Marilyn Knight Eaton, her philandering lawyer father, and April, Heather’s golden-haired, favored older sister, chubby “Heatherbean” sought refuge in the community. Lakeland City Commission denies proposed Verizon cell tower

LAKELAND  The Lakeland City Commission, this week, upheld its Planning and Zoning Board s decision to deny a proposed cell tower at 1800 Harden Boulevard.  In January, the board voted 4-2 to deny the proposed cell tower brought forward by applicant Mattaniah Jahn. The application was for a 110-foot tall, flush mount cell tower, which Jahn said was a compromise down from the originally desired 150-foot tower. Jahn represents SAFAN Inc. and 1 Source Towers, LLC, according to city records. Though Jahn argued the tower was needed to solve a significant gap in coverage for Verizon users, the board found the tower to be incompatible with the city s land development code. The tower would have necessitated a significant adjustment to the city s setback requirements and would have ended up too close to nearby residential neighborhoods.

Controversial Lakeland projects have fired up residents lately

In the past year, the Lakeland Planning and Zoning Board has seen a lot of what they wouldn t typically expect: active participation.  I would say that the cases that have come before us in the past 12 months have been unusually more controversial, Community Planning and Housing Manager Teresa Maio said.  Maio said she doesn t know whether it s a coincidence or if as development pressures increase, residents become more active and observant about what s happening in their communities. She also hopes participation can be connected to the board s publishing of agendas online and promotional social media.  Regardless of the reason, the number of residents attending meetings is definitely up, Maio said. While in the past, one or two cases a year may have drawn major input, there s been a lot more resident turnout for case decisions throughout 2020.
