i said, oh. that s a lot of money. what did you pay in taxes? he goes, don, practically nothing. that was a couple of years ago. i never forgot it. the other day he calls me up because he hears me talking about hedge fund guys are going to pay up. he calls me the other day. i was only kidding. he doesn t know what to do. the truth is they ll do just fine because we re going to make the country so successful they ll do just fine. they ll end up doing better. they ll end up doing better. but we ve got to lower taxes for a lot of people. corporations paying far too much. middle income people are being decimated. they re being decimated. [ cheers and applause ] i mean, we have a group of 200 guys, but but the middle income in this country is being decimated, and we re going to change it. we re going to change it. so i ll be announcing, over the next three or so weeks, i ll be announcing i think a great tax
they have. they ve said that. just that he would take them up on it. it was interesting to watch him essentially try to pitch it wasn t pro forma. i have watched the sanders stump peach. this was a different speech. big chunks were the stump speech but he did try to craft and tayl tailor it to the audience in a way he thought would be maximally at a peeling to them. it was very different. it s generally a 50-minute to an hour-long rallying the troops speech. this was like professor bernie sanders. i mean, he really he reached way out. he talked about the bible, as you quoted in those package pieces that you showed a second ago. he talked about pope francis and the religious support for boosting the poor up and spending more government money to support the poor and education and things like that. this was a totally different sanders. i think really reached out and tried to make this work.
economy? not for our economy. we lose on everything. we lose on jobs, we lose on money. we lose on everything. what i would say is the following. i don t want you to do that. and if you do it, you re not going to have any cars coming across the border unless you pay a 35% tax. that s it. that s it. [ cheers and applause ] no. that s it! and they re going to say they re going to say to me, mr. president, please, please, please. now, i guarantee you. let s say i make this call at 9:00 in the morning. by 5:00 in the afternoon i think the deal is done, they move back to the united states. it may take a half a day longer. it may be 12:00 the following day. but i guarantee you so they ll but what will happen is i will be called by lobbyi s lobbyists. but they re not giving any any money. i won t take it. i turned down $5 million last week. i just go like this. i close my eyes. it s not natural to me to turn
almost as much welt as the bottom 90%. and in your hearts, you will have to determine the morality of that and the justice of that. joining me now white house reporter for buzz feed, evan an torah who attended the rally. i was fascinated by the event. tell me a little bit about how it came about. the thing about this event that you have to know is that this is an event that both served the needs of liberty universities and bernie sanders. liberty university, months ago, invited bernie sanders to come and speak as part of their sort of convocation system where they re trying to bring in new voices, show off that the school is interested in showing the students different voices and sanders opened giving the chance to show that he can go before all types of audiences and deliver his message. i think both sides came away
many cases, no real loyalty to the united states. they want to show a good profit and loss statement. so they go to another country and all of a sudden their numbers look good. they can t bring their money back in. for two and a half, three years i ve seen every politician agrees that we should lower the tax on bringing money because it s so onerous that nobody in this room would bring that money back. everybody says it. for two and a half years the democrats, republicans, conservatives. everybody. they can t make a deal. we have a government that s really messed up because we don t have a leader at the top. a right leader could get it done. the right leader will get it done, and you will see numbers like you never have seen before. i actually believe that and we re in trouble, you know. i have made the statement and i ve said this before. the american dream is dead, but
