Onslow s Sheriff Miller recalls career, Thomas prepares for campaign

The surprising announcement during Saturday s Onslow County Republican Convention may have caught local citizens off guard, but the inner workings behind the news started around a year ago.  Chief Deputy of the Onslow County Sheriff s Office, Colonel Chris Thomas, is looking to move up one rank in the department after announcing his candidacy for Sheriff. Thomas was promoted to Col. in January 2019 after joining the department as Major when current Onslow Sheriff Hans Miller was elected in 2014.  Miller s vision when taking office six years ago was to help modernize the department by bringing it into the 21st century through policy and procedural changes. 

Colonel Thomas to run for Onslow County Sheriff

The Chief Deputy of the Onslow County Sheriff s Office, Colonel Chris Thomas, Is looking to move up one rank in the department after announcing his candidacy for Sheriff.  According to a release from his campaign, Colonel Thomas has served in law enforcement for over 34 years, beginning in 1986 after graduating Basic Law Enforcement Training at Coastal Carolina Community College.  Colonel Thomas is a United States Army veteran serving his country from 1983 to 1986 with an honorable discharge as a Specialist 4th Class.  (Full biography is attached to this release.)   Colonel Thomas believes that as Onslow County continues to grow, the citizens of the county deserve experienced leadership and service to lead the sheriff’s office.  He has dedicated his life to the service of his country and community.  Colonel Thomas was born in Onslow County, and is a resident of the Richlands area. (WITN) - A special prosecutor says no charges will be brought against Onslow County Sheriff Hans Miller after he failed to report a traffic accident to police last month. Cumberland County District Attorney Billy West issued the ruling this afternoon. West was brought in to examine the Jacksonville police investigation into the February 9th accident after Onslow County D.A. Ernie Lee recused himself from the case.

DA clears Onslow Sheriff of charges from Feb single car crash

The district attorney in Cumberland County completed his review of an investigation into Onslow County Sheriff Hans Miller s single-car accident at the beginning of February and has ruled that no charges will come as a result.  On Feb. 9, Miller was in a single-car accident when his county-issued 2019 Dodge Durango hit a fire hydrant. Miller was later confirmed by media to have been on the way to or leaving an Onslow County Women s Republican meeting.  The Daily News previously reported information gathered from an interview with Miller on Feb. 19 where the sheriff said he was going to the meeting sometime after dark, cut a corner a little too short and damaged his county-issued vehicle.
