A Wilmington man was charged with animal cruelty Tuesday after his dog had to be euthanized due to the severe injuries he allegedly caused. New Hanover County Sheriff s Office Animal Service Unit deputies responded to a call April 22 for a possible domestic situation, according to the sheriff s office Facebook page post. The post said that, Neighbors heard a dog screaming in the house and noises of something hitting the wall. When deputies arrived at the scene, Arceoly Mendes, 22, answered the door. He allegedly denied access to the deputies when they asked if they could come inside the home to ensure no one was hurt, including his dog, according to the post. Due to the six-month-old Husky named Harley being on the sheriff s office Check Welfare List,  the deputies did not need Mendes permission to enter the home to check on the dog.
