Like so many other events, the Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department had to cancel the annual Cardboard Boat Races because of COVID. In fact, the entire Aquatic Center was closed all last summer. Thankfully, the pool will reopen in time for Memorial Day weekend.
The fifth Cardboard Boat Race is set for June 26. You’ll need to have your team registered by June 18.
Every year, youngsters team up to build their best cardboard boat and attempt to ride in their boats for as long as possible before the boat sinks. Boaters are tasked with building a functional craft with only cardboard and duct tape. Each boat must have two passengers, ages 6-16 and the entire boat and oars must be made of cardboard.
HANNIBAL â With spring flowers starting to emerge, itâs time to take little ones outside to enjoy nature.
The upcoming family-friendly nature program called Spring Wildflower Walk will be 1-2 p.m. Sunday, May 16, at Riverview Park.
The program will start at Shelter No. 2, the first overlook of the Mississippi River. The program will be led by nature educator Gale Rublee.
âThis will be very family friendly and young children are encouraged to attend,â she said. âWe will learn more about wildflowers so you identify the spring bloomers on your outdoor outings.â
Rublee has more than 25 years of experience as a nature educator.
HANNIBAL â When the American Queen comes steaming up the Mississippi River to Hannibal this year it will find a docking area ready for it to use, thanks to an agreement that has been reached between the city and the company which owns the steamboat.
During Tuesday nightâs meeting of the Hannibal City Council approval was given a ground lease agreement between Hannibal and the American Queen Steamboat Operating Co.
âThe agreement covers several things, though its primary substance involves port availability for American Queen dockings, which are non-priority dockings, specifically subject to the priority docking rights of the other tenants,â wrote City Manager Lisa Peck in a memo to the council.
