HANNIBAL â The city of Hannibal hopes to use a state grant to help pay for the replacement of aging runway lights at the airport.
During Tuesday nightâs meeting of the Hannibal City Council at city hall the department of public works was granted permission to apply for a Missouri Department of Transportation aviation grant to be used to replace runway lights, the Precision Approach Path Indicator and Runway End Identifier Lights at Hannibal Regional Airport.
âCurrently our runway lights are out of compliance due to their height and age,â said Andy Dorian, the cityâs director of central services. âIn addition our PAPI and REIL are at the end of their useful lives and are suffering consistent failures.â

HANNIBAL â When the American Queen comes steaming up the Mississippi River to Hannibal this year it will find a docking area ready for it to use, thanks to an agreement that has been reached between the city and the company which owns the steamboat.
During Tuesday nightâs meeting of the Hannibal City Council approval was given a ground lease agreement between Hannibal and the American Queen Steamboat Operating Co.
âThe agreement covers several things, though its primary substance involves port availability for American Queen dockings, which are non-priority dockings, specifically subject to the priority docking rights of the other tenants,â wrote City Manager Lisa Peck in a memo to the council.
HANNIBAL â The next step in the process of calling a special election in Hannibal later this year was taken Tuesday night at city hall when the city council gave first reading to a bill authorizing such an election on Aug. 3.
During the council meeting on March 16 council members voted to stage an election in August. The purpose of the special election is to ask voters in the city of Hannibal to raise the sales tax rate by 0.5 percent. If Proposition One is approved the sole purpose of the revenue that is generated by the increase would be to fund âcitywide infrastructure and remedial improvements.â
