University of Oregon decision leaves some students in housing limbo

UO Grad Students Protest University s Decision Use Student Housing For Quarantine & Isolation

1:05 KLCC s Melorie Begay reports on the University of Oregon s decision to not renew leases for some graduate students living in Graduate Village because the university plans on using the housing for quarantine and isolation units. PhD Anthropology student Hannah Wellman told KLCC it feels like the university is sweeping them under the rug. She along with other residents of the 72-unit Graduate Village complex received an email last Friday stating the university will repurpose units in the Villard building for quarantine or isolation. Citing the guidance of health authorities and the state, the email from Michael Griffel, the Director of University Housing, said the overall capacity for Graduate Village would be reduced.

Mon 8:30 | Curious: The Long Life And Long Death Of Oregon Sea Otters

A sea otter at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Newport Beach, 1907. That was the last time and place anyone saw an Oregon sea otter alive in the wild, and that one was killed. The lustrous fur of the animals made them popular targets for hunting, until there were none left. And efforts to reintroduce them have failed, twice. Hannah Wellman at the University of Oregon is researching the otters importance to the indigenous people of the Oregon coast, and possible pathways to successful reintroductions. She joins us in this month s edition of Curious: Research Meets Radio, our joint project with UO.
