Acclaimed singer-songwriter Yola will release a new album entitled
Stand For Myself via Easy Eye Sound on July 30. Yola previewed her sophomore full-length LP by sharing its lead single, “Diamond Studded Shoes,” along with a video for the track.
The 12-track album was produced by Dan Auerbach who also helmed 2019’s
Walk Through Fire. Yola recorded
Stand For Myself, described as “a sonic shift from her debut album,” last fall with a rhythm section featuring bassist
Nick Movshon and drummer
Aaron Frazer. Co-writers on songs crafted while Yola was self-quarantining during the pandemic include Ruby Amanfu, John Bettis, Pat McLaughlin, Natalie Hemby, Joy Oladokun, Paul Overstreet, Liz Rose, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Hannah Vasanth and Bobby Wood.
âThe video is in part inspired by the
Truman Show and is about being trapped in a false construct,â Yola said in a release. âIt is supposedly perfect, but you re trapped in a life that wasnât meant for you. I wanted to convey the feeling that everything you know to be true is not quite working the way itâs supposed to. The island at the end is a paradigm of mental conditioning, we are all trapped on an island of our own thinking, until we change it.â
The song taps into the civil unrest many have been feeling over the past year. Yola asks listeners âto unite and turn our focus to those with a stranglehold on humanityâ instead of falling prey to âthe false divides created to distract us from those few who are in charge of the majority of the worldâs wealth and use the âdivide and conquerâ tactic to keep it.â
