Three Families, BBC1, review: Hard hitting and difficult to watch for all the right reasons

Three Families, BBC1, review: Hard hitting and difficult to watch for all the right reasons The i 3 days ago Emily Baker © Provided by The i Three Families (Photo: BBC/Studio Lambert/Steffan Hill) It might seem strange to praise a drama for its downbeat tone and general lack of excitement. But then Three Familieswasn’t intended as throwaway entertainment. Gwyneth Hughes’ chronicling of the suffering inflected on generations of women by Northern Ireland’s oppressive abortion laws was, by design, hard-hitting and difficult to watch. The second of two episodes avoided sensationalising the experiences of Hannah, Theresa and Rosie. All three were based on real women who bore the brunt of Northern Ireland’s legacy of social conservatism until the legalisation around terminations was liberalised by Westminster in 2019.

BBC drama Three Families leaves viewers in tears

Viewers of BBC drama Three Families were left sobbing as they watched the stories of women impacted by Northern Ireland s restrictive abortion laws. The two-part series, which continues tonight, is based on writer Gwyneth Hughes s conversations with three women who were seeking an abortion in 2013, six years before the procedure was decriminalised in Northern Ireland.   Last night s episode introduced two of the women: Hannah (Amy James-Kelly), who is forced to go through with a pregnancy even after learning the foetus has a fatal abnormality, and Theresa (Sinéad Keenan), who is arrested after ordering termination pills for her teenage daughter who was forced into sex by her violent boyfriend.

Three Families paints Northern Ireland s fight for abortion rights with the nuance and hope its women deserve

A couple fight for dignity as they are forced to see through the pregnancy of their first child, who will die quickly of fatal foetal abnormality. The mental and physical health of a woman are pushed to chilling extremes when she discovers the suffering she must endure to carry her dead foetus to term.

Three Families review – a surface-level study of abortion anguish

Last modified on Wed 12 May 2021 08.28 EDT It was only a couple of years ago, I’d warrant, that the majority of people in Great Britain became aware of the fact that, although the 1967 Abortion Act has permitted the termination of unwanted pregnancies for the past 50-odd years, its remit never extended to Northern Ireland. An extraordinary grassroots campaign to give the country’s women the same rights that exist in England culminated in Westminster forcing the decriminalisation of the procedure in 2019. Gwyneth Hughes’s drama Three Families (BBC One) began in 2013 and took in the situation at the time, and the fight for liberalisation of the law, through a series of personal rather than political lenses. The trio of narratives were based on Hughes’s interviews with three women whose lives were altered by the most restrictive abortion laws in Europe.
