A garden has always been spatial shorthand for sanctuary; in times of crisis, this gets amplified. As many of us increasingly seek the safe haven of our garden, the local park or nearby nature reserve, we raise a glass to the many, gorgeous green projects that bring cheer and serenity to our everyday lives. From small domestic gardens, to plant-based urban interventions, woodland installations, leafy architectural landscapes and even the dry terrain of desert flora, here, we tour some of the best projects set to green up our views and encourage the healing

A profession of minds, hearts and hands, architecture encompasses a challenging and diverse range of endeavours. The list this year includes architects whose built achievement we, 20 years older, would admit being envious of, as well as practices who have yet to get their hands dirty and apply their bold social intent to practice. I was looking for a set of passionate souls, mode-breakers, uncynical and courageous. Diversity is important to me not just in gender and race, but also in terms of social and architectural outlook.

Fifteen years seems to me a long time to wait to celebrate the abundant, constantly metamorphosing talent and fresh perspectives in our profession. It is important to take stock and look at where we are as a profession, the multiplicity of ways in which we are responding to advancing technology, shrinking economics, glaring social issues and sweeping environmental awareness.
