Starting Jan 1, ATVs will be allowed on Chief Eddie Hoffman Highway

The new state law, signed by Lt. Gov. Kevin Meyer back in October 2020, will allow ATVs on all state roads. That’s unless a municipality has forbidden them, which Bethel has not. Bethel’s municipal code already allows for ATVs on city-owned roads. Now, come Jan. 1, ATV drivers will also be allowed on state-owned roads.

State Of Alaska Files Eminent Domain Action On Polk Property

The Alaska Department of Transportation wants to pave a road that passes through a native allotment owned by the Polk brothers: Warren Polk, Earl Polk III, Vincent Polk, and Jason Blaine Polk.  The DOT said that it made offers to purchase the land from the Polks at least seven times since 2005. Their most recent offer was $99,400 for 2.396 acres, which is the amount that the Polks would receive if the state took the land by eminent domain. Warren Polk, one of the landowners, said that the amount is too low to be a respectable offer. The DOT claims that it never received a formal counteroffer.

Speedy sled dogs carry Aniak’s Richie Diehl to Bogus Creek 150 victory Published January 31 Share on Facebook Print article The Kuskokwim 300′s COVID-19 mitigation plans proved to be a boon this weekend for Aniak’s Richie Diehl and some other top mushers from the Bethel region. Diehl, who usually opts for the lucrative Kusko 300 instead of its shorter companion race, claimed his first Bogus Creek 150 title early Sunday morning by beating a couple of Kaisers. It was minus-10 when Diehl reached the finish line on the river near Bethel’s small boat harbor at 4:59 a.m., just in time to break the 17-hour mark by a minute.
