In recent years, the Public Health Agency of Canada recognized racism as a determinant of health; the Toronto Board of Health and the Canadian Nurses Association also identified anti-Black racism as a public health emergency. Professional organizations such as Black Physicians of Canada, Alberta Black Therapist Network, Alberta Association of Black Social Workers, and Black Physicians’ Association of Alberta have formed, in large part, to dismantle anti-Black racism in the health-care sector. However, many policy-makers and service providers do not recognize the need to directly address anti-Black racism.
