yes. the parents left, and he stayed at school? yes. do you know what time of the morning? shortly after 10:00, i believe. between 10:00 and almost 1:00, right. the shooting was close to 1:00, right? correct. 12:52, thereabouts, first call came in or was dispatched. he went to the bathroom, loaded the gun in the bathroom before walking out to shoot, can you confirm that? i can tell you he came out of the bathroom with the firearm and began shooting. i can t tell you if he loaded it in there. any updates on a motive just yet, sheriff? no. we obviously are not communicating with the suspect, so we can t get that from him. we re working items we have seized, as i talked about, documents, papers, phones, evidentiary value items to see if there s something that would lead to us understanding what would motivate him.

brooks asked to use his phone and call uber. i called an uber and i m supposed to be waiting. i don t know when it s coming. can you call, please? reporter: not long after, ryder said he saw police going up and down the street and felt it had to do with brooks. he told him to leave. moments later i saw him looking for his i.d. moments later the police see him and get him in cuffs. i had no idea in my house. the uber showed up maybe a minute after he was in cuffs is all. i think about sometimes if he had gotten in that car what would have happened. reporter: before allegedly driving his car through the parade, police say brooks was involved in a domestic disturbance earlier sunday. he has a criminal history going back to the 90s. in july of 2020 he was accused of firing a hand gun during an argument. in february of this year he was released on bail. less than nine months later he allegedly ran over a woman whoa claimed she is motte they are of his child with his car.
ammunition that was found at the murder scene. but without the actual gun itself, the circumstantial case wasn t strong enough to charge smoot with murder. then, the crime lab released its ballistics report showing that marks on shell casings from the crime scene matched marks on a bullet found in smoot s home. his missing hand gun appeared to be the murder weapon. hat s a huge connection? it is pretty much the connection. in june of 2012, eight months after brooke was killed, shawn smoot was indicted on charges of first degree murder. did you immediately identify with her just being this young woman who was clearly so vulnerable? oh, absolutely. prosecutors bob edwards and tiffany starr smith saw this case as a relationship turned deadly. we re still talking about domestic violence. we re still talking about orders of protection, and all of the things that go wrong in those situations.
