A court in Egypt has declared Hanaa Mohamed Hassan criminally insane after she beheaded her five-year-old son with a machete and ate his head. The court ruled that she killed her son "in a state of madness" and ordered her to be held in a secure psychiatric unit. Before the ruling, prosecutors argued that Hassan killed her son out of fear of losing custody. However, a panel of court-appointed psychiatric experts found that she was delusional and did not realize the seriousness of her actions. Hassan will be held at a mental and neurological health hospital in Cairo.
