Shinsegae Group Vice Chairman Chung Yong-jin made a surprise visit to Naver s headquarters in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, to meet Lee Hae-jin, the Internet portal operator s founder and global investment officer (GIO), Thursday.
The two were joined by the E-Mart CEO Kang Heui-seok and Naver CEO Han Seong-sook, to discuss possible business partnerships in online shopping. E-Mart is a subsidiary of Shinsegae Group.
No specific deal has been confirmed, but a Shinsegae Group official said they discussed areas of common interest where they can create synergy in the retail and e-commerce businesses.
Another industry source said Naver will establish a strategic partnership with Shinsegae Group or swap stocks with the retail giant to seek cooperation as it did with CJ Logistics last October.

[Photo by YG Entertainment] BTS label Big Hit Entertainment gained major traction in its global drive through equity-backed partnership with South Korea’s internet major Naver Corp. and K-pop name YG Entertainment.
Naver on Wednesday signed to purchase a 49 percent stake in beNX, the fan community running subsidiary of BTS’ label Big Hit Entertainment, for 410 billion won ($368 million).
Big Hit on the same day approved a 70 billion won investment plan placing 40 billion won in beNX and another 30 billion won in YG Plus, the investment arm of another major Korean label YG Entertainment.

Naver founder Lee Hae-jin has been appointed as chairman of A Holdings, a joint venture established between Korean company Naver and Japanese conglomerate SoftBank to compete with American and Chinese rivals including Google, Alibaba and Amazon.
Line is the most-used mobile messenger application in Japan and is operated by Line Corporation. Yahoo Japan is the biggest portal website in the country and is owned by SoftBank. After the merger, A Holdings is expected to have 130 million monthly average users in Japan.
