Rwanda and Morocco progress to quarter-finals at African Nations Championship Tuesday, 26 January 2021
Rwanda have qualified for the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship after coming from behind to beat Togo in a crunch Group C clash in Cameroon.
Rwanda finished second behind Morocco, who topped the group with a 5-2 thrashing of Uganda.
Needing to claim all three points to book a place in the quarter-finals at the expense of Togo, Rwanda trailed 2-1 before goals from Jacques Tuyisenge and Ernest Suriga within the space of eight second-half minutes handed them victory.
Togo, who would have gone through with a draw, led through Yendoutie Nane before Olivier Niyonzima equalised for Rwanda in first-half stoppage time at Limbe Stadium in Limbe.
Goal after his side suffered a second group loss.
“Congratulations to my counterpart and Morocco and we wish them the best for the rest of the tournament. Look, it was a game we all knew it was going to be very tough.”
McKinstry did not contest the penalty for Morocco towards the end of the first half which was converted by El Kaabi. The star made history after scoring the penalty as he became the first-ever player to score 10 goals in a Chan tournament.
He had scored nine when Morocco won the previous edition on home soil.
“The penalty obviously could not come at the worst time but we have got no complain whether it was a penalty because even my technical bench could not see what I saw from my position and so it was a fair enough call,” he added.
