In their relentless drive to eliminate the coronavirus, authorities in China and Hong Kong have zeroed in on new targets: international mail and hamsters.
Hong Kong’s pet shop owners have hit out at a government decision to cull hamsters and temporarily ban imports of small animals over possible Covid-19 transmission to humans, saying the move will hurt their businesses.
HONG KONG (China Daily/Asia News Network): Health officials have decided to cull over 1,000 hamsters as another Covid-19 case linked to a pet shop cluster was among the 18 new infections reported in the city on Tuesday (Jan 18).
The decision was made after a pet store employee tested positive for the Delta variant on Monday, and several hamsters at the same store also tested positive.
