Bedale AFC Reserves 6 Hampsthwaite FC 3 BEDALE hosted Hampsthwaite FC in the Colin Lowe Memorial Premier Division. The heavy overnight and morning rain had been soaked up by the pitch, which was in perfect condition. Bedale had the first real chance after 6’ when Adrian Woodward (AJ) passed to Ryan Moule in the Hampsthwaite penalty area. He found Mikey Stevens, who hit the post, the loose ball being collected by Hampsthwaite keeper Jordan Latimer. His long clearance was chased down by Ethan Slade, who stroked his shot past the advancing Bedale keeper Josh Skittrall. Bedale hit back and equalised on 12’. Right back Michael Ingram put Bedale captain Jack Jennings through down the right. He was clumsily upended in the Hampsthwaite penalty area. John Henry scored the resultant penalty.

Bedale AFC Reserves 2 Harlow Hill firsts 3 BEDALE hosted Harlow Hill firsts in the Colin Lowe Memorial Premier Division, and prior to kick off, a minute’s silence was observed to reflect on the life of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Bedale goalkeeper Joshua Skittles was making his league debut, and he was in action after just six minutes when Harlow Hill had the first real chance of the game. Centre forward Tendal Machama hit a fine shot from 20 yards which Skittles brilliantly turned over his bar.
ASKED to offer three takes on the same subject, Tim Sawyer from Bramhope offered three images that were artistic variations on the famous Gormley figures on Crosby Beach. They very much caught the eye of Ilkley Camera Club’s visiting judge, Kylie-Ann Martin, last Friday and won Tim first place in the Three of a Kind competition. “Here the photographer has put his own stamp on another person’s artwork. That’s what I like since I am assessing the photographer’s skills not the artist’s,” said Kylie. Awarding second place, she praised three snowy scenes in a park taken by Len Downes from Hampsthwaite.

Does anyone remember those ‘Holidays at Home’ weeks in Harrogate during the dark days of the war? They were designed to persuade families to stay at home and not to waste time and money travelling the country. Most holiday resorts were shut down anyway, filled with pill boxes and barbed wire obstacles on the beach.
As a small boy I recall the competition to create a picture with coloured chalks supplied by the corporation. It took place along the pavement adjoining West Park Stray. We were each allotted a paving stone and then we set about making as interesting a drawing as we could. The judges came round in the late afternoon peering over our shoulders as we knelt over our masterpiece. I can’t remember any of my own creations attracting any praise, but it was good fun. There were many other attractions organised during that week.
