Southland disAbility Enterprises is giving its workers extra help with life skills through courses from the Southern Institute of Technology. The courses - skills for living and skills for work – are held in SDE’s boardroom three days a week under the guidance of SDE tutor Andrea Walton. She wrote the courses when she worked at SIT. SDE is a recycling business.
‘’This is a win-win solution. ‘’Farmers have an issue with bale wrap and SDE have the team that can deal with it,’’ Richards said. He offered to help with the project when he found out SDE had a funding shortfall of $200,000. ‘’I was pretty excited to get in behind and support this. ‘’They (SDE) are super-efficient at what they do, and this will not only help farmers but will keep people with disabilities in work.’’ Fortuna Group operates 19 Southland dairy farms milking 13,000 cows, which produce about 5.6 million kilogram of milk solids a year. Each of the farms had contributed $1000 to the project and Richards was urging other farmers to do the same.
