Bill Hammond, renowned New Zealand artist, dies aged 74 Eleanor de Jong Renowned New Zealand artist Bill Hammond has died, prompting an outpouring of grief and aroha from Kiwis. He was 74. Hammond was born in Christchurch in 1947 and studied at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts. He later gained recognition for cityscapes incorporating elements of film noir, pop culture and comic book references. The Christchurch Art Gallery described his work at a 2007 exhibition as “awash with visual sampling, splicing and mixing”. Before becoming a full-time artist in the 1980s, Hammond worked as a wooden toy maker, in a sign factory, and as a jewellery designer.

From the outset of her career, Suzanne’s creative mission was to change the perception of stained glass in Aotearoa. Alongside partner Ben Hanly she founded Glassworks in 1980 in Auckland; Suzanne brought her fine arts background to the table (she studied at Canterbury University) while Ben had a wealth of technical expertise in glass fabrication. Together they have been creating unique stained-glass work ever since, sourcing their exceptionally high-quality glass from Europe St Just in France and Lamberts in Germany.

Hamish Keith s Poignant Paint Ode to Auckland The influential writer and creative has collaborated with PPG Paints for their innovative New Zealand Makers range of bespoke colours Monday Dec. 14, 2020 A tribute to creativity and visionaries, for its New Zealand Makers campaign PPG Paints has challenged five local tastemakers to devise their own suite of paint hues. Writer Hamish Keith is one of the first group of creatives joined by designer Beth Ellery and artist Saskia Leek, photographer Mark Smith, and glass artist Suzanne Hanly. Working closely with PPG Paints’ colour experts (including Chief Coloursmith Rachel Lacy) and the brand’s innovative colour creation technology, Hamish has created a deeply personal range of paint hues evocative warm greys, a characterful rust, manuka green and a blue called, quite simply, joy.
