Boat carrying 200 litres of marine diesel oil partially sunk near Whitianga

• Source:  1 NEWS A boat carrying 200 litres of marine diesel oil has partially sunk in Coromandel after hitting rocks last night.  The vessel remains partially submerged on the rocks in Humbug Bay, Devils Point. Source: Whitianga Volunteer Coastguard. It’s prompted concerns by the Waikato Regional Council with bad weather on its way for the northeast coast this afternoon.  Four people were rescued from the launch around 8pm yesterday after their vessel struck a rock off Devils Point, causing it to take on water.  None of the crew were injured.  Marine officers have been at the site in Humbug Bay, near Whitianga since this morning to assess the wreckage. 

Police investigation launched after newborn hospitalised in critical condition

• Source:  1 NEWS Police have launched an investigation in to determine how a three-week-old baby sustained injuries in Hamilton earlier this week. Source: 1 NEWS In a statement this afternoon, Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Saunders said the baby girl is in a critical condition in Auckland s Starship Children s Hospital. Her injuries are being treated as unexplained while Police, alongside Oranga Tamariki, work to establish the cause, Saunders said. A scene examination has been completed at the Hamilton property where the baby and her parents live but the investigation is ongoing and further updates will be provided when available.

Man pleads guilty to attempted murder of wife after failed suicide pact

• Source:  An elderly man has been sentenced to four and a half months home detention for the attempted murder of his wife in a suicide pact. File picture. Source: istock.com Matamata man Roy Morton, 82, pleaded guilty in the High Court at Hamilton. He attempted to kill his wife and himself on two occasions after she suffered a debilitating stroke in October last year. He claimed that even though his wife was unable to verbally communicate with him he knew from her gestures that she wanted to die. Justice Davison did not accept that due to Morton s lack of capability to understand.

Man arrested, charged with murder after fatal assault in Taupō

• Source:  1 NEWS A man has been arrested and charged with murder after a fatal assault in Taupō late last night.  Source: File image A police spokesperson told 1 NEWS they were initially called to reports of a serious assault on Arthur Crescent at around 11pm. One person has since died and police are treating the death as a homicide. A 34-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder, due to appear in the Rotorua District Court tomorrow. Police say they re now in the process of speaking with witnesses and conducting a scene examination.
