HAARC: Racial equity ignored In Madison County police reform process
Hamilton Area Anti-Racism Coalition
The Hamilton Area Anti-Racism Coalition (HAARC) submitted another statement to Madison County about police reform Dec. 16 at a virtual meeting. HAARC continues to center the dialogue around racial inequities in policing. They claim that to date, the Sheriff s Office has not examined or discussed practices that may disproportionately target community members who are Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC).
“The governor’s mandate for police reform was created in direct response to the immense public outcry following the murder of George Floyd and countless other BIPOC people who have been killed by police,” said Cris Amann of HAARC. “If you read the executive order, it is 100 percent rooted in addressing racial inequities in policing. The Police Reform Committee continues to ignore this.”
The Police Reform Committee of Madison County has failed at following the governor’s executive order for police reform, says the Hamilton Area Anti-Racism Coalition (HAARC).
The HAARC have submitted a statement to the Madison County Board of Supervisors outlining the ways in which the county is not following the mandate.
“In our statement, we highlighted the seven most glaring problems,” said HAARC member Julie Carlson. “To name a few, none of the committee members have expertise in police reform and none of them have expertise examining racial inequity. They have also done a terrible job engaging the community.”
HAARC also suggested corrective measures the county can take.
