TALUQAN, Afghanistan, July 11 (Xinhua) Taliban militants attack on Taluqan city, capital of Afghanistan s northern Takhar province, has been repulsed, a provincial government official said Sunday.
The militants fled away after suffering casualties and leaving over two dozen bodies, government spokesman Hamid Mubariz said.
The armed insurgents launched multi-pronged offensives to Taluqan city early Sunday morning, but the security forces returned fire, forcing the insurgents to flee after suffering casualties and leaving 25 bodies behind, he said.
Meanwhile, army officer in the province Abdul Razaq told Xinhua At least 18 Taliban rebels have been killed and the rebels failed to gain ground in Taluqan city.

KUNDUZ: Ahead of the US planned troop drawdown, clashes between the Afghan forces and Taliban have intensified with conflicting claims of inflicting losses on each other.
Six militants were dead as fighting planes struck a group of Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan s northern Kunduz province Saturday night, an army spokesman in the northern region captain Abdul Razaq said Sunday.
According to international media reports, a group of Taliban mine planters were busy in planting mines on a road in Ali Abad district that links Kunduz to the national capital Kabul city on Saturday night.
Acting on tip-off, the fighting planes targeted them, killing six on the spot, Razaq said. Taliban outfit has yet to make a comment.
