MERRILLVILLE â Planning continues for two roundabouts in the Mississippi Street corridor, and the town has a funding source for the majority of construction costs.
In total, about $5.4 million in federal funding is available for roundabouts planned for 69th and 79th avenues on Mississippi Street, said Jake Dammarell, of Butler, Fairman & Seufert. He said that money will pay for 80% of the construction of the roundabouts.
Town Councilman Shawn Pettit said some residents could be opposed to roundabouts, and he asked if using that method is safer than a signalized intersection.
âRoundabouts are definitely safer, thatâs why everyoneâs really going to them,â Merrillville Engineering Administrator Steve King said. âKeeps traffic flowing.â
MERRILLVILLEÂ â The town is adding part-time personnel to the Code Enforcement department for security purposes.
Town Councilman Richard Hardaway said there are two code enforcement officers who issue citations for overgrown yards, tall weeds and other violations.
He said there have been occasions in which they are threatened with harm when issuing citations, and one person recently followed a code enforcement officer after she responded to a violation.
âWe canât have our employees in harmâs way,â Hardaway said.
Merrillville is hiring a part-time employee to go with the officers while they handle code violations. Hardaway said increasing the presence should prevent situations from escalating.
