Mackayâs army cadets will soon have fit-for-purpose barracks with about $1m being committed for upgrades to 11 buildings.
A Department of Defence Force spokeswoman said the project at the Komiatum Barracks on Shakespeare Street was expected to be finished by the end of the year.
Refurbishment works include replacing flooring, making sure the roof access is compliant, repairing and repainting surfaces, fixing damage to walls and ceilings, replacing chain wire to vehicle bay gates and more. Komiatum Barracks along Shakespeare Street in Mackay. Picture: Heidi Petith
âThe works are needed to ensure that the Barracks are viable for Australian Defence Force requirements and are testament to Defenceâs commitment to Mackay,â the spokeswoman said.

The Year 10 student said she was honoured to wear them at the Kuttabul Dawn Service, a special commemoration that remembers those who served and the Australian Light Horse brigade.

Judith Sheean said she was proud, honoured and overwhelmed to wear the first Victoria Cross awarded to an Australian navy crew member.
It was posthumously awarded to Teddy Sheean, 78 years after he died from an incredible act of heroism during World War II.
As the special guest at the Half Tide Beach Anzac Day Dawn Service, Mrs Sheean said the honour was supposed to be reserved for her husband William Teddy’s nephew but he passed away six weeks earlier.
“My husband was desperately hoping to make it here,” Mrs Sheean said.
“But I’m here.
