Dr. Hakique Virani said the romantic holiday might be important for local businesses but it runs the risk of bringing people from different households together, possibly spreading the currently prevalent strain of the novel coronavirus and its more infectious variants.

“It’s so disappointing that we are in a rush to reopen,” he said. “The narrative that we do this in the interests of small business survival is a bit disingenuous.”
