Before the pandemic halted communal activities at the university, Haitian Professor Johnny Laforêt of the French Department hosted Haitian Kreyòl Language Tables. Today, the Princeton Caribbean Connection would like to resume this preservation and celebration of the beloved Caribbean tongue in partnership with the dedicated professor. Born on the west side of the island of Hispaniola, Haitian Kreyòl is largely comprised of the language of the French colonial power, the native West African tongues of the enslaved people, the indigenous language of the Taíno, and even Spanish. This melody tells the story of the resilient Haitian people. Preserving the language preserves this story. To continue preserving and celebrating the beautiful melody, the Princeton Caribbean Connection would like to teach Haitian Kreyòl to the wider Princeton community. This space will also be used for speakers of the language to practice and discuss Haitian culture and news in community. These language table
