Haitian Flag Day celebrated at Binghamton City Hall Unmute BINGHAMTON (WBNG) Mayor Richard C. David joined members of the Southern Tier Haitian Association at Binghamton City Hall in honor of Haitian Flag Day. Haitian Flag Day is celebrated every May 18 in honor of the creation and adoption of the flag, as well as the revolution for their freedom from the French. The members of the Southern Tier Haitian Association (STHA) is an organization of volunteers who came together in 2018 to unite, inform, and provide sensible solutions. Their goal is to empower others in their community, and to help people understand Haitian culture.

While celebrating the 218 th anniversary of the Haitian Flag, May 18, 2021, civil society organizations within the country and in the US planned joint protests in opposition to what they call the unconstitutional and illegal referendum on the constitution and elections being organized and promoted by President Jovenel Moïse. The protests are also aimed to highlight the hypocrisy of the international community that still supports Mr. Moïse’s autocratic rule. The organizers hope to bring the world’s attention to what is happening in the country; the issue of Haiti is not that people are not responsible for their lot, but international superpowers as well as incompetent leaders and outlaws. Protest organizers noted that in 2011, international superpowers imposed the presidency of Michel Marthely, an incompetent drug addict devoid of leadership capabilities on the unsuspecting people of Haiti. Mia McCarthy photo As of May 19, six mayoral candidates have secured the required 3,000 signatures needed to qualify for the September primary ballot, according to the city’s election department. There will likely be more to come. A total of 17 people had filed to gather signatures to run for mayor as of May 11.  Those who have been certified for the ballot already include Mayor Kim Janey, John Barros, and City Councillors Andrea Campbell, Annissa Essaibi George, Michelle Wu and State Rep. Jon Santiago.
