Article content This Feb. 7 marked the 35th anniversary of the end of the Duvalier regime in Haiti, following a popular uprising. Jean-Claude Duvalier had succeeded his father François and, combined, the dictator duo had brutally ruled the country for almost 30 years. This Feb. 7 was also Day 1 of Jovenel Moïse’s illegal tenure. As prescribed by the Haitian constitution, the date was to be the end of his five-year presidential mandate. But Moïse has remained in power, despite the increasing demands for him to leave it. His constitutional breach is notably decried by Haiti’s powerful Roman Catholic Church, by its business leaders as well as by the country’s judicial branch and various other institutions, all uniting their voices with those of thousands of protesters who have repeatedly taken to the streets in Haiti.
