File photo for representation MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government on Wednesday raised a demand with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow the state to manufacture the indegious vaccine, Covaxin developed by Bharat Biotech at Mumbai s Haffkine Institute. Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray raised the issue in the PM s Covid19 review meet on Wednesday. Thackeray sought for a technology transfer under the Mission Covid security from Bharat biotech to Haffkine Biopharmaceutical Corporation limited one of the country s oldest and premier biomedical research facilities. If the technology transfer happens, either vaccine can be produced at Haffkine or they can work on a fill and finish arrangement. Nearly 126 million doses can be manufactured at the Haffkine facility, said Thackeray.

State medical education departments secretary Saurabh Vijay said, “We have written to the central government to allow us transfer of technology so that Covaxin can be manufactured in Haffkine’s plants in Mumbai and other places. If they give us aid and transfer of technology, then we can upgrade our plants and start production in six months, and it will add to total capacity. We are awaiting a response from the Centre.’’

Maharashtra orders 9 lakh RT-PCR testing kits from Chennai Amid increasing daily covid-19 tests across Maharashtra, the Haffkine Biopharmaceutical Corporation LTD who is the main body for the procurement of medicines in the state has ordered 9 lakh Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) testing kits worth Rs 4.50 crore from Chennai. On November 21, the institute had floated a tender for the procurement of kits. Out of the 9 lakh RT-PCR testing kits, 1,72,000 kits have been allocated for Mumbai. Almost 2,27,400 kits will be sent to the National Institute of Virology and another, 50,200 kits will be given to the family welfare department in Pune. “We have selected a Chennai-based company to supply these kits. Moreover, in the first phase, we will get 4.50 lakh testing kits. Later, we will receive another slot of 4.50 lakh of kits,” said an official from the institute.
