just 15 second of intense wind, white noise, things crashing all around me. seven minutes later, the same storm formed a new tornado, packing winds of up to 100 miles per hour, whipping through brooklyn. holy [ bleep ] that s a tornado! today, while erasing the evidence, it was still hard to grasp what had hit them. now is the clean-up. i started early this morning. i m almost done, but thank god we re okay. 13 other states from south carolina to maine were rocked by damaging winds. some of the hardest hit, the nation s capital. more than 200,000 customers reported power outages. tornados are rare in new york city. there had only been 12 since 1950. that included one in brooklyn in 2010. ginger zee, abc news, new york. thanks ginger. it was a different kind of storm that darkened the sky over phoenix. a giant cloud of dust, known as a haboob, which is the arabic word for wind, blanketed the city. the wall of dust stretching 2,500 feet in the air, so thick,

skyline, including a busy i-10 in the foreground. but just before the haboob reaches the highway, he makes a mad dash for safety. when the dust storm hit, i had jumped in my car and it was instantaneous blackout. i d never been in a dust storm that turned the lights out that fast before. incredibly, the historic haboob on july 5th rolls through the city without a single death reported. this doctor credits phoenix residents for observing proper haboob protocol. it might have been due to the warning that the national weather service put out about this. but one of the nice things about this particular storm was there were very few injuries that were associated with it. people were able to do the things they were supposed to do. pull off to the side of the road, turn their lights off and take their feet off the brake. the city doesn t escape completely unscathed. the dense storm leaves thousands without electricity after blowing down multiple power poles. power just went out.
