Dhaka, Feb 4 : After 19 years, a court on Thursday sentenced 50 Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) workers, including MP Habibul Islam Habib, over the 2002 attack on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina s convoy in Satkhira.
The verdict was given by Humayun Kabir, Chief Judicial Magistrate of the Satkhira court.
During the verdict on Thursday, 34 accused out of 50 were present before the court.
All the accused are activists and workers of the BNP, with Habib and two others facing 10 years in prison.

A Satkhira court has jailed 50 people, including former BNP lawmaker Habibul Islam Habib, for varying terms in a case filed over the 2002 attack on Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina’s convoy in Kolaroa.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Humayun Kabir delivered the verdict while 34 accused out of 50 were present in the dock.
All of the accused are activists and workers of the BNP, with the former MP and two others facing 10 years in prison.
On January 27, the court fixed February 4 for delivering its judgment in the case.
The convicts also include Kalaroa’s former mayor Akhtarul Islam, Satkhira Bar Association’s former general secretary advocate Abdus Sattar, advocate of Supreme Court Abdus Samad, three former UP chairmen Ashraf Hossain, Rakibul Islam and Rabiul Islam and other activists of BNP.

Satkhira s Chief Judicial Magistrate Humayun Kabir announced the verdict in the case on Thursday. Among the convicts, 34 were present in court when the judgment was delivered while the 16 others were shown absconding.

On Aug 30, 2002, Awami League chief Hasina went to Satkhira Central Hospital to visit a rape victim who was the wife of a freedom fighter.

Dhaka, Feb 4 (efe-epa).- A Bangladesh court on Thursday sent 50 opposition members up to 10 years in jail after finding them guilty in an attack on a motorcade of Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina nearly two decades ago.
The motorcade of the incumbent prime minister came under attack in August 2002, when she was the opposition leader.
Public Prosecutor Abdul Lalif said Judge Humayun Kabir, the Chief Judicial Magistrate Judge of the southern Satkhira district, convicted all the 50 accused.
The defendants included a former Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) lawmaker Habibul Islam Habib.
