In an interview, Julie Stufft, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Visa Services, said, "In India, the demand (for US visas) is still very high. The wait time of six, eight and 12 months is not what we need and (it is) not indicative of how we view India."
The plan, formally announced during Modi s visit, has been well-received by the Indian community in the U.S. Stufft mentioned that there will soon be an official federal register notice outlining the steps, eligibility criteria, and instructions for the first tranche of applicants.
US immigration agencies have proposed changes to the H-1B visa program, which could affect Indian professionals in the US. The changes aim to modernize the program, combat fraud, and provide opportunities for startup founders. With approximately 580,000 H-1B visa holders in the US, many being Indian nationals, the changes have far-reaching consequences.
