Wrexham now has highest rate of coronavirus in Wales

WREXHAM is now the worst region in the whole of Wales for its rate of people testing positive for coronavirus among the population. The latest figures show that the rate in the county is 904.7 positive cases per 100,000 people in the community in a week that has seen the highest number of new cases since the pandemic began. Almost all of the 18 sub-areas of Wrexham, designated by Wrexham Council, have seen worsening figures since the last update from the council on January 4. There are now 11 coronavirus hotspots in the county which are in the worst centile in Wales, with ten having more than 800 cases per 100,000 members of the population. An increase from six just four days ago.

Heat map shows just where coronavirus was spreading across Wrexham and Flintshire in lead-up to Christmas

AS we enter the New Year, Public Health Wales show exactly where coronavirus has been circulating within Flintshire and Wrexham communities. The mapping feature was first added to the daily update provided by health officials in response to COVID-19 in October. It presents data broken down beyond the standard local authority areas that people could previously access and now shows how individual communities compare. The data is gathered using Office of National Statistics figures of middle layer super output areas (MSOAs) and present the rolling number of cases in either a seven-day or 21-day window. Darker areas indicate higher concentrations of the virus whilst lighter areas show lower transmission rates. The map details state that case numbers are suppressed for any MSOA where there were fewer than three identified cases.

Councillors call for mass testing and responsibility this New Year after high levels of coronavirus identified in Gwersyllt

TWO Wrexham councillors are calling for mass testing after parts of the town have become some of the worst infected areas in Wales. Councillors Gwenfair Jones (of Gwersyllt West) and Phil Rees (of Gwersyllt North) have called on Wrexham Council to introduce mass testing in Gwersyllt following publication of figures that show that the 7-day rate for the area is over 1,200 cases per 100,000 - one of the highest in Wales. Prior to the Christmas break, Wrexham Council issued an update to its local representatives which disclosed these numbers that caused concern. The latest update from Public Health Wales’ community level data shows that figures have increased slightly since then.
