A 56-year-old Coral Springs woman was hit and killed by a bus at the Broward Transit depot, and officials said mechanical malfunction isn't considered a factor in the collision.

Gwendolyn Whitfield, the Broward County Transit driver who steered her bus to safety amid a fatal onboard shooting incident, was honored as a "Hometown Hero" by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. The flight demonstration team, which is participating in the annual Fort Lauderdale Air Show, ushered her through flight preparations and gave her a high-speed runway ride at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
