LAFAYETTE, La. - A donation drive has been set up to help out a man who lost his mother and home to a fire last week.
Firefighters responded to the 1100 block of 11th Street shortly before 6 p.m. on Thursday after a fire was reported by several neighbors.
When firefighters arrived, neighbors told them someone was inside the house. Firefighters then entered the home to search for the occupant, 69-year-old Gwendolyn Smith, who was found in the kitchen. Smith was brought outside where first responders performed CPR until Acadian Ambulance arrived on the scene.

An elderly woman died in a house fire Thursday afternoon in Lafayette.

A house fire caused by a cigarette killed a 69-year-old Lafayette woman Thursday.
Several neighbors reported the fire in the 1100 block of Eleventh Street and informed Lafayette firefighters someone was inside the house when they arrived on scene at 5:47 p.m. Thursday afternoon, according to a release.
A team of firefighters entered the smoke-filled home searching for the occupant. They found Gwendolyn Smith, 69, in the kitchen and immediately brought her outside, according to the Lafayette Fire Department.
First-responders performed CPR until Acadian Ambulance arrived on scene. She was transported to a local hospital but did not survive her injuries, according to LFD.
