(CNN) The Rev. Calvin Skinner has given hundreds of sermons, but he says this past Sunday’s felt more urgent than ever.
“The city of Knoxville has hit its boiling point,” he told CNN. “The case of Anthony Thompson Jr. really solidifies this feeling that enough is enough.”
Thompson, 17, was fatally shot by police when officers said they tried to disarm him inside a bathroom at Austin-East Magnet High School on April 12. He was the fifth Black student from that school to die due to gun violence this year.

(Knoxville, TN) – The Boyd Foundation has committed $1 million to YWCA Knoxville. It will help renovate the 96-year-old Downtown Center and expand the Keys of Hope Women’s Program. It will be renamed in honor of Jenny Boyd.
The financial commitment fulfills 10 percent of a $10 million fundraising goal in support of the overall Keys of Hope capital campaign. The program provides transitional services for women seeking to restore their lives and reach self-
sufficiency.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. According to the Knoxville Police Department, 17 people died this year because of shootings in the city. They said that 13 people lost their lives in just the first two months of the year. The most recent one was Monday night in East Knoxville.
Cities across the U.S. are also experiencing an uptick in gun violence, which is pushing leaders to make changes. Some are saying that collaboration is key to solving the problem. Knoxville leaders are making significant efforts to stop gun violence and address community concerns, and Mayor Indya Kincannon emphasized collaboration to address the violence.
